The Project

We need to save The Living Theatre, period. This month our beloved Lower East Side arts landmark learned that they were facing eviction. Unless we come up with $24,000+ dollars in the next two weeks, the organization will have to close its doors and say good-bye to the Lower East Side forever. With this money The Living Theatre will be able to pay its rent, bring in a consultant to develop a 5-year strategic plan, and turn itself into a financially sustainable arts organization. Bravo.

The Business

The Living Theatre has been a cultural landmark in the Lower East Side for over 65 years. Founded in 1947 by the legendary duo Judith Malina and Julian Beck, the group has staged over a hundred productions in NYC and all over the world. Part experimental theatre, part cultural revolutionaries, The Living Theatre group wants nothing less than to rewrite the theatrical contract.

  • I just pledged. When will I get my reward/voucher?

    As you know, Lucky Ant is an all or nothing system. Your credit card won't be charged until the project reaches its goal (see goal above). Once the project reaches the goal your card is charged and you will receive your voucher. If time expires and the project has not reached the goal, your card will not be charged.

  • You've reached the goal, but I still want to help! How can I?

    We've reached the goal! Yay! You can still pledge though. Judith and the team need all the help they can get, so if you haven't gotten around to pledging: please do! Let's see how far we can take them!

  • Is the Living Theatre really closing?

    This is it guys. It's now or never to keep this cultural icon on its feet!

  • How do we know this won't happen to them again?

    The Living Theatre has had a bit of a rough stretch. They have agreed to bring in an outside consultant to help them shore up their finances, but they need to get their heads over water first.

  • What is this I've heard about winning a free open bar at Barramundi for pledging?

    You've heard right. Lucky Ant is working closely with fellow LES shop-local enthusiasts Zipcard. Here's the deal. If you pledge for The Living Theatre Lucky Ant project and are also a Zipcard member (www.zipcarded.com), you are automatically entered into a raffle to win a free 1 hour open bar for 20 people at Barramundi.

  • Why did the amount just go down?

    Sometimes someone accidentally pledges twice and we have to remove their excess pledges. That is why the amount may have dropped.

  • Is my donation tax deductible?

    If you choose not to redeem your reward, you can receive a tax deduction for your donation. Simply write: "donation" in the person redeeming in the shopping cart and we will take care of the rest.
